Local students outperfomed English ones in core subjects

A 'MASSIVE collaborative effort' has led to Guernsey students outperforming their counterparts in England in maths and English, Education minister Robert Sillars said as the department released new performance indicator figures.

The newly-released findings, benchmarking island secondary schools – excluding the colleges – against state-funded mainstream schools in England, show the number of pupils making 'expected levels of progress' in English is 75.6% locally and 74.4% in England. For maths, that figure is 74.1% compared with the above the68.8% registered in England.

According to Deputy Sillars, there is no one reason why the figures are higher than those registered in Englandon the mainland.

'This is down to a massive collaborative effort,' he said. 'This is students working really hard, teachers teaching hard and inspiring the students, all the learning support staff.

'We can always do better and are always looking to improve and we are looking for an upward trend in statistics. It is about what each individual student achieves.'

Deputy Sillars said the figures were released in the interests of transparency.
