The Aval Du Creux, La Moinerie, Hotel Petit Champ and Dixcart Bay Hotel are among those that will be shut.

Kevin Delaney, the CEO of Sark Estate Management, has addressed the employees of Sark Island Hotels, a subsidiary of SEM.

'We will not be opening any of our hospitality businesses next year in any shape or form or for any foreseeable period after that,' he said.

The Sark Newspaper, which Mr Delaney edits, has blamed the political situation in the island and the lack of a customs post which means it does not have direct access to the French tourist market.

'Sark is not a democracy, it is a one ruling party state reminiscent of 1930's Germany,' it says.
