Ports account 'not raided to pay for airport terminal'

THE Ports Holding Account has not been used to fund airport developments disproportionately, the harbour director said yesterday.

At an Institute of Directors lunch to outline the £80m. harbour overhaul project, Sarah McGreevy said the account, which historically had surpluses and which the airport had paid into, had not been unfairly pillaged to fund the airport terminal.

Instead, a recent survey to look at how the money had been spent had shown a very different picture – contrary to popular belief.

'We have looked over the last 20 years and can say what went into and out of the account. Although recently more has been used to fund the airport, I can only surmise that was because there was a glut of funds in there they had paid in previously. But the surpluses paid in by Guernsey Harbours have been used to fund Guernsey Harbours.'
