EDUCATION fears that a last-minute amendment from the chief minister could delay its long-awaited plans to rebuild La Mare de Carteret schools.

Chief Minister Jonathan Le Tocq, pictured, has tabled the amendment to Education's proposals, which are due to be debated at next week's States meeting starting on Wednesday, which would introduce extra scrutiny and review of the project before funding can be released.

Education minister Robert Sillars said the move could hold up its plans and timescale.

Building work is expected to start in May next year with the new schools and sports building to open in September 2017.

'I'm very surprised that an amendment has come in so late when we have been working on this project since January 2013,' said Deputy Sillars.

'This could cause a delay and that is a big concern.'
