No extra Liberation Day

A BANK holiday has not been set aside to celebrate the 70th Liberation Day next year due to an 'absence of any requests to do so', according to Commerce and Employment.

As Liberation Day 2015 falls on a Saturday, there will not be an additional day's holiday during the week.

For the last 69 years, 9 May has always been marked with a day off work, regardless of the day of the week on which it fell.

In 2010, for the 65th celebrations, Liberation Day fell on a Sunday, and there was a public holiday on the Monday.

A spokesperson for Commerce and Employment said: 'In the absence of any requests to do so, and respecting the special nature and historical significance of May 9th in this context, the department has made no investigations into possible changes to the traditional Liberation Day public holiday arrangements for 2015.

'The department has no current plan to submit a report to the States seeking to amend the existing provisions in the Public Holidays Ordinance.'

But it said that celebrations will be taking place over three days from Friday to Sunday.
