Education seeks graduates to train to be teachers

WITH an ageing teaching profession, Education is having to go off-island every year to get secondary teachers, the director of education has said.

And with 'just about enough' local candidates for primary school vacancies, the department is encouraging local graduates interested in training on-island to be a teacher to get in touch.

In partnership with the University of Brighton, the initial teacher training programme offers an employment-based route into teaching with the opportunity to 'earn while you learn' and leads to Guernsey-qualified teacher status.

Alan Brown said that about five or six embark on the 12-month programme each year, with 'virtually all' becoming teachers and who still remain in post now.
