The 93-year-old died peacefully on Saturday 22 November.

Family and friends, servicemen and veterans, as well as island dignitaries were among those who attended a packed Town Church to pay their respects.

The service, conducted by the Rev. John Luff, saw two readings, from his daughter, Anne Palmer, and daughter-in-law Lesley Caldwell.

Eulogies were given by Ben Remfrey, founder of the Mines Awareness Trust, now part of Pax Mondial, and by Major Eric Le Quesne, who described Major-General Caldwell as a 'true friend'.

'He was a great leader, a good planner and organiser, and had a unique ability to see the potential in people,' Major Le Quesne said.

'He was one of Guernsey's famous sons and he should be remembered as such and honoured as such.

'He was a very caring, remarkable man and we should be proud of him as he was a great soldier and a war hero.'
