Exhaust pipe caused plane crash, report finds

A FRACTURED engine exhaust pipe caused a pilot flying from Guernsey Airport to crash land just off the runway, an air accident investigation has found.

The AAIB report said the plane, a Socata TB10 Tobago, had climbed to about 1,500ft when smoke filled the cabin and became 'rapidly chocking' and thicker causing visibility to reduce significantly.

Pilot John Shaw was forced to land and struck a greenhouse on the way down.

The report found that an engine exhaust pipe had fractured and the hot gases had burnt the glass-fibre cowling.

The incident happened on 17 June 2014.
