Gollop calls for strategy rethink
ENVIRONMENT board member John Gollop has broken ranks and said its 'struggling-to-survive' transport strategy needs a total rethink, including an eleventh hour re-tendering of the new bus contract.
Until now the board has presented a united front, but Deputy Gollop said he believed Environment should go back to the drawing board on the strategy, which has faced growing criticism in recent months.
He was among a growing number of politicians calling for a full investigation into the island's bus service 'needs', with Commerce and Employment minister Kevin Stewart suggesting an expert could be parachuted in.
Deputy Gollop admitted he might consider his position on the board after the latest twists and turns of the strategy are played out in the States between now and the end of February.
'I think already we have got to the stage of weakening the potential and environmental impact of the strategy,' he said.
'Already we are at a stage where misleading information has taken on a life of its own and politicians appear to have changed sides. At this time the strategy is struggling to survive and we need the Environment Department to fundamentally reconsider every aspect of the strategy.'
