Fall in uni students follows pupil numbers
A FALL in the number of university students stems from fewer young people in the island, Education has said.
The latest Ucas figures reveal a drop of 17% in the number of Guernsey students applying for a place at university between 2006 and 2014.
But the department said the percentage of young people going to university has remained steady.
In 2006, 295 students were accepted. While this rose to 310 the following year, it dropped to 245 in 2014.
An Education spokeswoman highlighted that the figures published by Ucas included older students as well as school leavers, unlike the department's annual report, which gives comprehensive figures on 18-year-olds.
'The Ucas figures do not reflect the actual numbers in the 18-year-old cohort, which will, of course, fluctuate year-on-year.
'In 2006, the cohort of 18-year-olds was 713, but the proportion attending university was 27%.'
