'Stubborn' statue couple will not give up despite rejection

'WE WILL not give up' a 'stubborn' couple have vowed after plans for a 12ft sculpture of a kicking Guernsey donkey in St Peter Port harbour were rejected yesterday.

Environment board members sided with the planners' recommendation 3-1 to refuse the project at an open planning meeting on the grounds that it was not suitable for the area.

But Geoff and Jennie Dorey, pictured, who submitted the application to put the cast bronze sculpture close to the Castle Breakwater in the form of a non-profit company called Guernsey Donkey LBG, were defiant that it would be a positive enhancement and ticked all the boxes under the States' public art guidelines.

'There is a sense of frustration because we do think this will be a wonderful thing for the island,' Mr Dorey said.

'We now need to think where we go next. There are alternative locations but they are just not quite as good. That's why we pushed for this.'

Mrs Dorey, who first thought of the concept more than 14 years when she saw Copenhagen's Little Mermaid, added: 'We are stubborn like a donkey so this is not going to go away.'
