States 'would step in' if bus contract with CT Plus fails

ENVIRONMENT would look to take on bring the bus service in-house if the contract with CT Plus fell through, it has said.

The department's clarification of its 'back-up option' follows questions raised by unsuccessful bidder The Green Bus about why, with just two companies left in the tender, it had not been kept on as reserve.

'If, for whatever reason, a contractor was unable to provide the bus service, the States would step in to provide a core service pending evaluation of other options,' an Environment spokesman said.

The department was due to sign the new deal with chosen operator CT Plus yesterday but this has been delayed following Environment's withdrawal of legislation for first registration vehicle width and emissions charges, leaving the transport strategy unfunded. Its current contract runs out on 31 March.

'The Environment Department has had extremely productive discussions with CT Plus and all elements of the contract are agreed,' a spokesman said.
