Businesses reported the lights started flickering at about 2pm, just before the power cut.

Sigma's IT sales and services manager Dave Sands said after the electricity went, there was a smell of burning from the nearby substation.

'We could hear crackling, so we called the fire brigade,' he said.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene, along with Guernsey Electricity engineers.

Watch Commander Milton Le Moignan said firefighters – wearing breathing apparatus – had ventilated the substation building and used a thermal imaging camera to see if there was anything burning inside.

'Some equipment was still warm,' he said.

Guernsey Electricity technicians were soon on site, checking the substation.

A spokesman said engineers were working to identify the fault and power has been restored to most residential houses in the area.
