States Works were preparing to clear debris with an even higher tide of 10.3m being predicted for tomorrow at about 8am.

'But if the wind picks up tonight, as they say it will, I think it could be entertaining around here tomorrow.'

Water was flooding into La Biloterie Road in St Saviour's. Douzenier Andrew Courtney, who lives in the area, said it was the first chance to try an experiment aimed at reducing the tendency of the storm drains that were fitted across the road several years ago to get blocked by seaweed. Stainless steel grids, square to road, were in place at the first of the drains. This enabled them to collect most of the debris while water drained away at the back.

Police closed the Town seafront between the Weighbridge and the Town Church as a precautionary measure due to the height of the tide. The new one-way system will be in operation again when the tide ebbs.

Bus services were disrupted on the east and west coasts.

The Met Office has issued a severe tide and flood warning for tonight and tomorrow morning saying wind and high tides may cause spillage over sea walls with debris thrown onto coast roads. Flooding is expected in exposed low-lying coastal areas.
