Education's HQ in line to become housing

HOUSING could replace the Education Department's offices in the Grange after the site was earmarked under the new draft Island Development Plan.

The area is one of nine in St Peter Port that have now been allocated for housing under the draft plan.

Education said moving from the site was part of the States Strategic Asset Management Plan and its officers were working with the team behind that to plan and programme the transfer to suitable alternative premises as and when funding allowed.

While it is not known how long this could take, once Education has moved, the future of the sites lies with Treasury and Resources.

Treasury said the States Property Services would consider the development opportunities for the site.

'At this current time the presumption is that the site will be considered for disposal, with the development undertaken by the private sector.

'As a consequence, the number and mix of dwellings will be determined by the market needs at that time.

'The main Couperderie building has been protected under the existing planning legislation, so will require sympathetic adaptations to realise the residential benefit of the whole property.'
