Deputy Trott, who raised the matter during last year's States debate on the La Mare rebuild, said he despaired at the money wasted by the States in not dealing with key questions beforehand.

His comments come ahead of tomorrow's public release of the independent report into the long-awaited rebuild project, which includes recommendations from the panel on a wide-ranging investigation into Guernsey's entire secondary and tertiary education structure.

As well as addressing the size, scope and specification of the La Mare rebuild, the panel suggests that the all-encompassing review that could include the number of schools, the College of FE and future of the 11-plus.

Deputy Trott said he had already warned during the last La Mare debate of the need for a decision on selection.

'Repeatedly during last year's debate on the La Mare schools rebuild, I stated how I believed it was essential for the States to decide, before commencing the project, whether it intended maintaining selection at 11 for the foreseeable future and pressed the Education Department for its intentions on this point, but to no avail,' he said.
