St Peter Port marine oil painting up for auction

A VICTORIAN oil painting of a Dutch cargo boat at St Peter Port by distinguished marine artist, Edward William Cooke, is set to fetch around £7,000 at an auction.

The 23 inches by 18 inches picture of the Dutch galliot is coming up for sale at Dreweatts at Donnington Priory at Newbury, Berkshire, on Wednesday March 25.

The auction coincides with the anniversary, two days later, of the birth of E.W.Cooke, who was born in London on 27 March 1811.

Although Cooke's St Peter Port painting is not dated, Cooke's biographer John Munday confirms in his book, E.W.Cooke: A Man Of His Time, that Cooke visited Guernsey three times, in 1836,1847 and 1869. On one of these visits, he wrote, Cooke 'arrived off St Peter Port before 6am, he thought the town looked most magnificent....'
