'Politics not education is at heart of school closure idea'

DEBATE surrounding a recommendation to close one secondary school seems to be less about the quality of education and more about politics and finance, the Grammar School headteacher has said.

Tina Watson, pictured, was speaking after the release of an independent report on Education's project to rebuild La Mare de Carteret schools which made the proposal.

'The manner in which the review panel report has been made public is hugely disappointing and damaging to the staff and students within our schools,' said Mrs Watson.

'It has paid little regard to the children who will be receiving news of their secondary school placement on Wednesday 25 March, to the significant burden that is placed upon schools to recruit and retain high-quality staff during this peak time for recruitment or to the impact that this level of uncertainty causes for staff at a time when over 550 students in the Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre alone, will shortly be undertaking external examinations.

'As a headteacher with a long experience of working in education in Guernsey, this debate seems less about the quality of education but more about politics and finance.'
