Golf clubs reject new rent proposal

L'ANCRESSE golf clubs  have rejected the latest rental proposal from the Vale Commons Council, stating that they have already made a final offer of £50,000 a year, which is above the commercial rate for the course.

A letter to members states that the L'Ancresse and Royal Guernsey Golf Clubs' joint negotiating committee put forward that proposal to the Culture and Leisure Department, which would add to the £30,000 the council receives annually from the Environment Department to maintain the common.

The letter stated that this was a fair deal.

'To require the clubs to pay more than the proper going rate for the golf course area – with no amenities on it or attached to it – would be to impose on members something equivalent to a form of penal taxation,' it stated.

The clubs have paid for a UK expert to calculate the appropriate commercial rent for the course, which he determined to be £32,000 to £35,000.
