The project, a joint initiative from Culture and Leisure and Education, aims to help create a link between the wartime generation and the children of today.

Each enamel mug has the 2015 Liberation celebration logo printed on one side – complete with the message in English and Guernsey French: 'Remember and celebrate with island pride' – and an image of brothers Peter and Roger Bott, as children on the historic day on the other.

Hautes Capelles were in the middle of their 1940s-themed week at school when they received their 514 mugs yesterday afternoon.

Head teacher Sue Coughlin said the project was 'a great idea'.

'We have been focusing on the Occupation and Liberation Day all week, having war-themed tea parties, making ration cake and dressing up in wartime attire, and they will take their mug home today inside their special Evacuation brown bags.'
