GPs welcome plan to rate performance

DOCTORS' performances will be compared with each other under a new 'scorecard' scheme that aims to drive up standards.

GPs will be ranked against practice average and the overall island standard in individual aspects of their work – but the results will not be made public. Rather, the information will be used in annual appraisals.

It is one of several last measures being introduced by Health and Social Services to strengthen the governance process across healthcare before the General Medical Council allows Guernsey to restart its revalidation of doctors and consultants.

It was halted temporarily and is due to resume at the beginning of July.

HSSD's responsible officer, Dr Nick Lyons, said the scorecard would provide personal feedback on performance over a year and how they compared to fellow GPs.

'It should drive quality up rather than performance-manage them into the ground.

'We should start to reap the benefits of this and patients will reap the benefits of it as well.'
