Jo aims to get more cyclists wearing helmets

CYCLIST Jo Watts has launched a safety campaign to get more people to wear cycle helmets after being severely injured in a training ride crash.

Watts suffered 11 broken bones when a van pulled in front of her as she was travelling at 30mph along the Vazon coast road in early March.

The cyclist struck the central pillar of the van and was thrown to the other side of the road.

But despite the seriousness of her injuries, her helmet saved her from a potentially far worse fate.

'I'm extremely lucky,' she said.

'My helmet was split and bashed, but my head wasn't hurt.

'If I can encourage a few more people to wear helmets, some good will come out of it,' she added.
