T&R 'should not make policy on the hoof for education'

TREASURY AND RESOURCES is not there to develop education policy 'on the hoof', it has been argued, as a crunch debate over the La Mare de Carteret rebuild looms.

After T&R lodged an amendment which would support the £60m. redevelopment, but only if Education agreed to close one of the other secondary schools, Deputy Heidi Soulsby said the department should not interfere with items outside its mandate.

'They are asking us to make a decision based on no evidence. I am concerned that Treasury is making education policy on the hoof. The whole thing is a mess and it should not have gotten to the point where we are having to do this. It would be good if we could make a decision next week.'

Deputy Dave Jones said he had been swayed by Education's argument and expected to vote for it next week.

'They have looked at this for nearly three years and I believe them. La Mare has been argued and has to be rebuilt. There should be enough schools in the island for there not to be ridiculous class sizes.'
