'Just get on with La Mare' urge parents

SCEPTICISM is growing among some parents over whether the La Mare de Carteret schools will ever be rebuilt without more major delay.

Mothers and fathers of pupils are now calling on Education, Treasury and the wider States to 'just get on' with the project and bring the equality in education that has been promised for more than a decade.

It comes after the long-awaited £60m. redevelopment moved a step closer at last month's States meeting. A last-minute compromise between Education and Treasury means the latter can go out to tender for a new school, for either 600 or 900 pupils.

But before a spade goes into the ground Education must produce a report for debate in March on secondary education, including the future of the 11-plus and whether to close schools. Simon Martel, who has two children at La Mare Primary – one of whom is about to move up to the high school – said doubt was growing over whether the project would avoid further stumbling blocks.

He attended the school as a child and was concerned there would be further delays. 'Now we are losing faith it will happen while our kids are there,' he said.
