Polish Embassy steps in to EU 'blacklist' battle

POLAND has waded into Guernsey's battle to be removed from an EU blacklist.

The Polish Embassy in London yesterday confirmed it had informed the EU Commission that Guernsey was not on the national Polish blacklist.

It came as Chief Minister Jonathan Le Tocq, pictured, spoke of the continuing efforts to get Guernsey off the list of 30 non-cooperative jurisdictions, including making direct contact with the countries that had blacklisted Guernsey.

The EU blacklist, published last week, includes any jurisdiction on 10 or more Member States' lists.

While Guernsey itself is listed by only nine countries, it has been included because Sark – for which it has no legal responsibility in tax matters – is on Poland's list.

Poland actively removed Guernsey from its list in April 2013 and the Polish Embassy told the Guernsey Press that it had contacted the EU Commission about this fact.

'I have a pleasure to inform that Guernsey does not feature on the Polish blacklist,' said a spokesman.

'Our embassy was contacted by government officials in Guernsey last Tuesday and we provided them with that information.'
