Adoption rights granted to same-sex couples

SAME-SEX couples will soon have the same legal rights to adopt as married ones, after deputies rejected concerns among colleagues over the potential stigma on children and whether they would have a choice.

Chief Minister Jonathan Le Tocq successfully called on all deputies to support the progressive law change proposed by the Policy Council – which would also give the same legal rights to unmarried couples – despite some concerns and questions over the move, including the rights of any child that does not want to be placed with a same-sex couple.

Deputy Le Tocq, who told the Assembly he was himself adopted, said there was responsibility to give the best opportunities for children in the community who needed 'loving families'.
