The incident grounded the £25m. craft, causing flights to continue into the night to try and get passengers to their destination.

The strike happened on the 10.20am flight from Guernsey as it approached Gatwick.

An Aurigny spokesman said passengers would not even have noticed the strike, because the jet is designed to disperse the electricity safely.

'The strike exited through the tail, so there is a small hole,' he said.

Passengers were safely disembarked at London and a specialist Embraer 195 engineer was able to check the plane over.
