Annie Njoki Pover, 46, felt extremely honoured when she beat five other nominees to win the community service organisation of the year award at the recent event in Geneva.

The qualified social worker moved to the UK in 1996, before locating to Guernsey in 2011, where she has continued to work with children at Swissville.

However, growing up in Thogoto – a small village in Kenya – life was not always so good and Miss Pover explained how she was subject to domestic violence and had an alcoholic father.

But it was when her nephew was 10 and he ended up living on the streets, that Miss Pover knew she wanted to do something that would make a difference.
