'It is with great regret that I have to announce that His Excellency Air Marshal Peter Walker CB CBE, Lieutenant-Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, passed away suddenly in the early hours of today, Sunday 6 September,' said Bailiff Sir Richard Collas.

'Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Lynda, their three children and their families.'

Air Marshal Walker became Lt-Governor on 15 April 2011 in succession to Sir Fabian Malbon.

He joined the Royal Air Force in 1975, piloting Phantom and Tornado aircraft, and went on to command 111 Squadron.

He became Director of Operational Capability in 1999, Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Operations) in 2001 and Assistant Chief of Staff (Policy & Requirements) at Shape in 2002. He went on to be Commander of the Joint Warfare Centre in Norway in 2005 and retired in 2007.

Chief Minister Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq said he was very sad to hear of the sudden death.

'Since moving to Guernsey in April 2011, Peter fully embraced island life, playing a leading role in the community, particularly in respect of the support that he gave to many local charitable causes and youth organisations,' he said.

'Personally and professionally I shall miss the experience, dedication, advice and wit that he brought to the role as Her Majesty's personal representative in our Bailiwick. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Lynda, his three children and their family and friends.'
