Dr Stephen Bridgman was speaking shortly before the Jamie Oliver Sugar Rush documentary aired, in which the celebrity chef called for a 20p per litre tax on every soft drink containing added sugar.

The dangers of sugar, and its increasing prevalence in our diet, were becoming more known, said Dr Bridgman.

'All age groups are hooked on sugar, it does not influence your appetite, you get your sugar fix and you are still hungry.

'My personal view is that a sugary drinks tax is a measure worth considering,' said Dr Bridgman.
