Town Church window needs urgent repairs

A BUCKLING window at the Town Church needs urgent repairs before it is damaged by the wind.

The glass in the large easterly window, next to the Albion Tavern, was last replaced just after the Second World War and portrays the presentation of Christ at the temple.

But CCD Architects conservation surveyor Stuart Pearce said he was very concerned about the lead work in the lower part of the window, which has become warped.

'The risk is that if it is left and the panel is bulging and distorted, a severe easterly wind could then damage it,' he said.

'They are expensive to make and, if they are broken, we would have to reproduce new glass.'

The leadwork has become warped by changes in temperature. The fear is that this could cause the glass to break.

The panes are resting on top of each other, so, if part of the window fails, it could affect the rest of the panes.
