The Right. Rev. Trevor Willmott said with his agreement, Mr Northover, one of the island's two vice-deans, had gone to England.

'Reverend Kevin Northover has stood back from his ministry from stress and he is here in England,' the Bishop said.

'He is here because of stress caused by the pressure of work.

'I don't know how long he will be here but I would be more than happy to let you know when we know more,' he told the Guernsey Press.

The Vale Church curate, the Rev. Matthew Barrett, will oversee the church.

The Bishop wanted to reassure islanders that 'everything was in good hands'.
