A PLAQUE to commemorate the life and work of an 'unsung Guernsey hero' has been unveiled at Forest School.

Born in 1802 and educated in the Forest, Captain William Le Lacheur put Costa Rica and its coffee trade on the map.

In celebration of her fellow parishioner, Joan Ozanne wrote a play, The Interview With Captain William Le Lacheur, which was performed at the school recently.

The play has also been picked up in Costa Rica and will be translated so it can be performed.

Together with dean of the douzaine Richard Heaume, Mrs Ozanne also commissioned a plaque.

'For a Guernseyman to go out to Costa Rica as he did and help the country to prosperity is a great achievement,' she said.

'Not only is it wonderful for the island, but also for the parish, and we are very proud of what he did.'
