Island looking for cruise growth

ALBERT Pier has the extra capacity to bring even more cruise liners to Guernsey in future, Public Services minister Scott Ogier has said, as latest figures reveal that their passengers provided an almost £4m. direct boost to the economy this year.

Deputy Ogier said while there were no plans for a deep water cruise liner berth, due to its huge cost, PSD and Commerce and Employment would be holding talks this winter to look at future capacity and operators.

The expected deregulation of Sunday trading, which next month faces an attempt to block it, is identified as another area to increase cruise passenger spending – with some 30% of Sunday visitors saying it was a shame shops were not open.

'Unlike at White Rock, where we do have a lack of capacity, there is room for growth at Albert Pier,' said Deputy Ogier.

'We do need to make sure we manage a balance between life on Guernsey and bringing in people to St Peter Port.'
