Majority of islanders want German fortresses to stay

AN ONLINE debate on the future of German fortresses in Guernsey has shown that the majority of islanders want them to stay.

Followers of The Guernsey Press' Facebook page were asked if they thought the fortifications were 'icons or eyesores'.

Although most agreed they were ugly, they also said they were historically important and should not be removed.

Peter Torode of Festung Guernsey said that something could be learnt from each one.

'Each fortification has its own story to tell, and you can learn a lot of things from the smallest of details,' he said.

'I have to say keep them, they are important parts of our islands' history.'
