Support for air strikes although some fear repercussions for UK
CONCERNS about the possible repercussions following Britain's air strikes on Syria weighed heavily on the minds of islanders yesterday, after UK MPs backed action against the self-styled Islamic State in the region.
While most islanders spoken to supported the UK's decision, they were apprehensive about the potential consequences for the UK.
Retired Guernsey Electricity worker Tony Falconer said while he was supportive of Parliament's move, he had his reservations about what the fallout could be.
'I think it is the only option we have got,' the 69-year-old said. 'We just can't sit back and let them do what they want – we have got to strike.'
Stewart and Wendy Hayward, in their late 60s, also did not think there was an alternative.
'We just can't say what the repercussions of the decision are going to be,' Mr Hayward said.
'I think here in Guernsey we are a bit more separate from it and a bit more safe.'
June Oliver, 85, agreed. 'I think the UK Government had to agree to this. It is not because the other countries are doing it, it is because we need to do it for us.
'Nobody likes war, but I personally don't think we have a choice.'
