Midwifery reports list areas for improvement

WORKING closer with maternity service users, empowering staff and bringing policies, procedures and clinical guidelines in line with best practice are areas that Health and Social Services now needs to focus on, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, as it releases its independent reviews of Guernsey's maternity services.

The three reports are due to be published today, after the NMC gave verbal feedback on the findings last month.

They include a monitoring review of progress made against the five areas of concern identified in its October 2014 extraordinary review of maternity services, its inspection of the supervision of midwifery standards and its review of the nursing degree delivered locally through the Institute of Health and Social Care Studies.

Health and Social Services, which was given the opportunity to see the document before it is published, welcomed the reviews.

It said the monitoring review report provided a summary of the findings which stated: 'There have been considerable developments and progress made in the last year in response to the additional evidence report of concerns identified during the NMC extraordinary review at PEH Guernsey in 2014.

'The Maternity Services Transformation Plan represents a significant programme of change across HSSD and the hard work and commitment of midwives and other key individuals must continue if progress is to be sustained.'
