Bolton-born Martin Winward arrived at St Anne's School this week directly from the Falkland Islands, where, for the past two and a half years, he has been employed as head teacher of the secondary school and of the adult training centre.
Mr Winward was appointed to the permanent position after an interview process that included being grilled not only by staff but by parents and pupils.
He will replace interim head teacher Geoff Cowley, who has led the school since April.
