Head teacher Linda Paley wrote to parents recently after it was revealed around £62,500 was needed to repair the pool or it would close within three years.

She asked for their help, either by providing practical skills or any other support.

Phil Baldock, co-chair of the Castel PTA, said that while the association had already set fundraising goals for other projects, it would support efforts to repair the swimming pool where it could.

'As a a parent with one child there already and another two to go there, it would be great to still have the swimming pool.

'It is something we would like to support if we can,' he said.

The swimming pool is now around 40 years old and was provided by PTA fundraising.

Despite careful maintenance over the years, Education said it had become increasingly difficult and expensive to repair and maintain to appropriate standards.

Along with the school, it is now investigating some more creative ways to keep the pool open in the future.
