Schools are embracing 'an active curriculum'
SCHOOLS are integrating physical activity into many parts of the curriculum so that students become more aware of the benefits of healthy eating and exercise.
As part of the Guernsey and Alderney Healthy Weight Strategy 2016-2023, Health and Social Services has recommended that schools should endeavour to provide two, ultimately three, hours of physical activity a week.
However, rather than being prescribed to a set number of hours, Education believes schools should instead continue to embrace the 'active' curriculum where students are encouraged to see being active as a regular, normal activity.
'We recognise that physical activity is a lifetime habit and schools can address that in a number of ways,' said the department's lifelong learning manager, Alun Williams.
'But we have to make people realise that physical activity is much more than just doing PE, while that is an important part of it.
'Schools all over the world make the decision about how their curriculum looks.
'Therefore we would be reluctant to set out how many PE lessons they must have because each school is different.'
