Parishes 'in the dark' on kerbside recycling future

KERBSIDE recycling could stop in September if the parishes have to pick up the bill.

Public Services' has said it would continue to pay for another six months after the two-year trial ends in March, but cannot guarantee funding it after that. Its 'pay as you throw' system for rubbish collection would not be introduced until at least 2017.

The douzaines have accused the department of failing to answer requests for figures, saying it has little idea as to how the parochial rates system works, and generally dragging its heels on the whole issue of waste.

Kerbside collections were introduced as an interim arrangement for two years in March 2014 while other elements of the waste strategy were being progressed. The PSD budget for the scheme was £2.56m.

PSD said it could cover the additional six months from that sum. It intends to present its business case for the wider waste strategy to Treasury and Resources in April.
