Primary heads condemn 'hidden impact' of 11-plus

PRIMARY school head teachers are united in opposition to the 'hidden impact' of the 11-plus and back Education's plans to scrap it.

St Mary and St Michael's Helen Shepherd, St Martin's Cate Mason and Notre Dame's Peter McGovern said they supported recently announced proposals to consign the test to history.

The 11-plus had added to pupils' stress levels as parents spent large amounts of money on coaching and children knew there was a chance they could be labelled a 'failure', they said.

The renewed calls for the system's scrapping came as Education submitted a planning application to Environment about its much-delayed £64.2m. rebuild of La Mare de Carteret High School.

Mrs Mason said such a test was not fit for purpose in the 21st century and flew in the face of modern thinking about intelligence.
