LOCAL history will benefit from the inclusion of the Holocaust being taught from a Guernsey perspective, the deputy behind a requete on the issue has said.

Elis Bebb successfully steered a requete calling for Holocaust Memorial Day – 27 January – to be recognised officially in Guernsey.

It also contained provisions to direct the Education Department to teach facts about the Holocaust from a local point of view.

'I am pleased the requete has been passed and this is being put in place,' said Deputy Bebb.

'This puts in place the beginning of teaching local history in schools.'

At first, the requete had directed Education specifically to include in the curriculum teaching about the Holocaust from a Guernsey perspective.

Now it calls on the department to adapt the current way of teaching it, he said.

Occupation researcher Dr Gilly Carr will help guide what will be included. She said the work would evolve over three years.
