Threat to axe a school 'will drive teachers out'
AN EXODUS of teaching staff could be sparked by an 'irresponsible' last-minute move to axe a secondary school, Education minister Robert Sillars has warned.
Deputy Sillars said the controversial option, tabled as an amendment by Treasury minister Deputy Gavin St Pier, would also cause months of uncertainty and fear for hundreds of children and their parents potentially affected.
'To have this three days before the actual debate is irresponsible and it just creates more uncertainty,' he said.
'Every single student and parent will now be wondering what will happen to their school and what about the teachers?
'Nearly half are on a five-year licence and we know the UK has a shortage of teachers and are trying to recruit more.
'So if this happens, it is going to throw everything up in the air for our teachers because they won't know whether their school or jobs are safer. And what will they do? They will go back to the UK.'
