Vice-Admiral Corder was overwhelmed by the public support, with hundreds of islanders stopping their daily duties to watch him march from Victoria Marina to St James.

And it was this enthusiastic welcome that he spoke of as he addressed those who witnessed the installation ceremony.

It was a 'genuinely huge privilege yet humbling experience,' he said. 'Many thanks for the kind words and to everyone gathered here today, it is such a splendid welcome in a magnificent hall.'

He made a 'solemn promise to work to the best of his ability' and said he and his wife were looking forward to getting involved in island life.

'I hope you will get to know both Kathryn and I are very genuinely approachable and informal in our style,' he said. 'I can't wait to get stuck into the job.'
