Education to argue for £2m. to keep La Mare schools going

REPAIRS and enhancements at the La Mare de Carteret schools are earmarked for this summer holiday, Education minister Robert Sillars said, as the department explains to parents the implications of the secondary education debate.

Deputy Sillars said he was planning to hold meetings with Treasury next week about the need for enhancement work at the site and hoped that could take place this summer, when it would be most convenient.

He has estimated that about £2m. is needed to be spent on La Mare de Carteret High and Primary, internally and externally.

Part of a late amendment, laid during the secondary education debate, saw deputies agree it may be necessary to provide funding to maintain the La Mare schools and to ensure recruitment and retention of secondary school teachers.

'This is the only time where we get several weeks to do major work.

'We are meeting with Treasury and Resources to try to see how we can get money released.

'I would like to see a lot done during the summer.'
