Mignot safety fears over lack of doctors

ALDERNEY'S Island Medical Practice may be forced to withdraw from work at the island's Mignot Memorial Hospital if more money is not provided for an additional surgery doctor, the surgery's principal partner has warned.

Principal partner Dr Annabel Smart spends around two weeks per month single-handedly covering surgeries at the IMC, seeing patients at the hospital, attending emergency call-outs and performing out-of-hours home visits.

A recent professional appraisal, which was fed through to the General Medical Council, concluded that Dr Smart was a 'safe' doctor practising in an 'unsafe' environment – unsafe because of the lack of doctor support around her.

The Island Medical Centre is now the only GP practice in Alderney that is open full-time.

In response, Health and Social Services and Social Security said it was 'acting on the concerns'.
