Liz Walton, a member of the Channel Islands Great War Study Group, brought the case of Able Seaman John William Helman to the attention of St Andrew's church warden John Lee.

Mr Helman died almost two years after he took part in the famous Zeebrugge raid in April 1918, and, as a result, his grave is the responsibility of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, who administer the maintenance of graves for veterans who died of their wounds before 21 August 1921.

Mr Helman's death was a result of health problems brought on by his exposure to poison gas during the raid.
