Pride of Guernsey: 'A tower of strength'

DESPITE a lifetime of health issues, mother of four Betty Warr has been a tower of strength to her family. Her youngest child, Maggie Saunders, nominated her for the Parent/s of the Year Award, which is sponsored by The Christies Group.

Betty has just celebrated her 89th birthday but over the years she has battled a form of juvenile arthritis during the German Occupation, a bleed on the brain, breast cancer and a tumour on her jugular.

She is still able to drive, enabling her to run errands for, and visit, the elderly.

Maggie said her mum had been a 'tower of strength' not only to herself, but also to Maggie's two brothers and sister, and helped them through some difficult times in their lives.

Since losing her husband in 2005, Maggie said her mum had also been a constant support to both her and her daughter.

Betty herself has been a widow since 2001, when her husband died of cancer.

'There is nothing she will not do for us,' Maggie said.

'She is a typical Guernsey woman and is as stubborn as a donkey.

'The best way to thank her for everything she has done for us as a family is to put her name forward for Parent of the Year, an accolade that I feel she truly deserves.'

* The nomination period for all 12 Pride of Guernsey Awards remains open until 30 June. Forms appear in paper or visit our dedicated sister website www.prideofguernsey.com/nominate
