Pride of Guernsey: 'A very caring person who will help anyone'
AN AMPUTEE who has dedicated more than 30 years of her life to helping people with disabilities to learn how to play new sports deserves to be recognised, according to one woman.
Christine Le Prevost has been nominated for the Carer of the Year Award, sponsored by Specsavers, for her work with the Guernsey Sports Association for the Disabled, an organisation of which she has been a part since it was formed 30 years ago.
Nominated by Evelyn Bryce, Mrs Le Prevost also founded a swimming club for those with disabilities and ran it for 28 years before stepping down.
She is now chairwoman of the Guernsey Sports Association for the Disabled and, each year, she takes a group of young adults over to Somerset to take part in the Bath and West Disabled Games.
She has had to work tirelessly to raise money for the trips over the years and has in recent years managed to secure sponsorship from Only Fools and Donkeys.
'It isn't just me, because without the helpers it wouldn't be possible,' she said.
The association meets every week and it encourages those with learning or physical disabilities to join in with sport.
Mrs Le Prevost, who is now a pensioner, lost a leg when she was just 22 in a road accident. She said she had loved swimming before the accident and did not want to let her disability prevent her from carrying on.
Mrs Bryce said Mrs Le Prevost had never let her disability stand in her way. 'Christine is a very caring person who will help anyone,' she added.
The nomination period for all 12 Pride of Guernsey Awards remains open until 30 June. Forms appear in paper or visit our dedicated sister website www.prideofguernsey.com/nominate
